Taking a Break

A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue's Kitten Cam is taking a break for a while, until Spring 2014. To keep our community of chatters together, a player has been embedded on the blog with the chat, that includes a drop down option to allow the switching between other kitten cams.

If anyone would like to volunteer to go through the recorded videos of the Pirates, Space Kittens, or other cams, to edit and/or find good videos to post please let me know.

Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day With the Pirate Kittens

The Pirate Kittens set sail on the internet to plunder hearts
What’s more adorable than a little kitten?  A boat-load of kittens.  Make that a pirate ship full of Admiral Amber and her litter of mateys  3 tabby girls named after real life female pirates Grace O’Malley, Charlotte de Berry, Anne Bonney, and one tabby/tortoishell ("tortie") girl named Treasure (sometimes hidden, often buried); and 2 orange and white boys named for the fictional and real pirate captains: Flint and Kidd.

This wonderful fleet of kits is being nurtured by a foster family while their adventures are broadcast 24/7 at http://www.ustream.tv/ASecondChanceRescue, the current location of a travelling kitten cam that started in 2011 and has combined views of over 2 million.  This litter is just one in a parade of kitten cam celebrities that have won hearts around the world – literally!  A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue (ASC) in Royal Palm Beach, FL, does an amazing job of moving cats and kits rescued as strays or from high kill shelters, through a variety of healthcare issues (including spay & neuter procedures) and finally to their 'fur'-ever families.

There are many kitten cams online that showcase loving and creative foster homes, but the ASC gang, has run the gamut of themes and sets: from "Kitten Cam-elot" with "Sir Arthur and the Knights and Ladies of the Round Bed"; The Shakespearean kittens (both complete with cardboard castles and “attacks” by a dragon (Boston Terrier/Pug mix) named Chug) and the Space Kittens and their lunar colony – including moonscape scenery, spaceship and space-themed kitten names.  Of course, each theme litter also gets to enjoy the kitten disco parties with music, spinning lights, disco balls, and a lighted dance floor.
So if your friends are driving you crazy with ‘talk like a pirate’ jargon, check in on Admiral Amber and her 5-week old deckhands.  But fair warning - they be stealin’ your heart.  Arrrrr!!!!

Milo Update: Off Insulin!

Milo is off of insulin!!  His check up today went really well and Dr. Ciucci said I could stop his twice daily injections and keep him on his specialized diet.  He will go in next week for a check to make sure he is staying in the blood/glucose range he should be and if he is then he stays off :) He will continue to be monitored for a couple of months to make sure his levels don't get too high again.  Good news for Milo, he is an awesome kitty and you can really see in his eyes that he is feeling well :)

Amber the Pirate Queen

The foster mom of the new kitten litter to be on the kitten cam (by the weekend I think), wrote to the KittenRescues blog to describe her beautiful new momma.

Hi,
I found this beautiful kitten crying in my front yard in the penta flowers near our mailbox on July 14th, 2013. I called her and she came right up to me.  I figured she belonged to someone in the neighborhood and sent over 80 emails to our neighborhood association.  Not one neighbor had ever seen this kitten before. I notified PBC animal control and never heard from anyone.  Many in our neighborhood believe someone "dumped" her in our neighborhood.

I have been calling this precious kitten Amber.  When I took her to the vet I was relieved that she tested negative for FIV/FeLV.  I was also very surprised to find out she was pregnant, since she was only a kitten herself.  The vet guestimated that she was about 7 or 8 months old.  The vet also recommended that I spay her in the next week which would abort all her kittens.  I didn't feel comfortable doing that and am so happy I chose not to.

Amber gave birth to six kittens on the morning of August 11, 2013.  She did such an amazing job with the delivery of her six babies.  Although Amber only weighs 6 lbs herself, she had no trouble with the labor and delivery.  She was very efficient and had all six kittens out in an hour and a half.

Amber is a very sweet, gentle, and laid back kitten, not to mention how gorgeous she is. She is affectionate and enjoys being around people. She is such a loving mommy to her babies, even though she is only a kitten herself. I am so in love with her and I feel so blessed to have found such an amazing girl.

Inara Adopted!

Our sweet #SpaceKitten lit up like a Firefly when she met her new mom at Petco. Inara strutted her stuff, showed that she would be a great companion, and boarded a new ship to a home planet with a slightly older kitty brother who looks like Stormy.

Mom will hopefully keep the kitten cam chat crew posted on her progress. Congrats pretty baby!

Don't forget to watch the remaining Space Kittens on ustream!

A SECOND CHANCE RESCUE-SPACE KITTENS

SPACE– KIT-TAIN’S LOG

(as written by Communications Officer  Skwitty)
Star Date 7-22-2014

It’s been some time since our last posting, and our rigorous training at space camp is almost complete. We have mastered the ‘mad dance’ moves of Kitty Disco.
We conquered the Battle of the Ringworm.  Not as fierce as the battle for the “Ring”  and just a little more irritating than the “Ringo” battles experienced by our ground crew.
Our base camp expanded from the mesh dome to a much larger facility.  We believe the mesh dome was a test of our ability to locate escape routes (thanks, Zoe).
Over the last couple of weeks, all of us have been to the medic for what we’ve heard referred to as “the procedure” or “snips”.  Not entirely unpleasant, but it seems something(s) missing.Thank you to the pharmaceutical team, very mellow.
Today we are missing our sister, but we did get to meet her new crew.  It seems our lunar trips served us well as she was actually 30,000’ above the planet on her journey home.
We think we’ll all be getting relocation orders – some of us may get to travel together, others may go off on our own.
We know we’ll be thriving little kit-dets wherever we end up in this great galaxy.  Our training with the commander they call KR and her First Officer KS equipped us well.
Scotty got quite attached to KS – he didn’t learn that we aren’t supposed to be so demonstrative in our affection for the bi-peds

Soon we’ll say good-bye to base camp, the training facilities and our space toys – and to you, dear readers. If you’ve smiled and laughed, good.  But we’re cats.  So we don’t really care :-)   Until we meet again.

The next momma

Picture of the Pirate Kitten's momma.  She is likely to give birth soon so keep checking back for updates

Flashback: Princess Rue

Rue, also known to the kitten cam world as Princess Rue, was part of a litter of 3 screaming kittens abandoned by their mother under a local Delray Beach private school/artist studio.  Little Rue and her sister Effie and her brother Gale, were found at the right time, as a mother cat named Jessica was just getting the hang of being a mom of two and could accept a couple more, or so I thought.

The screaming banshees, as I called them, were a bit too much for Jessica to handle, so I had to assist in bottle feeding.  My dog at the time, Stella, was happy to help be mother and took care of a lot of the less glamorous parenting duties.  For a few days, two other orphan kittens, Peeta and Katniss, also joined my "Hunger Games" litter and Stella helped them all.

Jessica got better at motherhood and I decided to fire up the kitten cam again.  I put Jessica, her 2 babies, Haymitch and Cinna, and my three orphans together on camera.

Weaning Rue was a chore.  When she discovered wet food, she always threw her entire body into the wet food, requiring baths multiple times a day. Stella enjoyed the first phase of bath, licking off much of the formula and wet food, but I would usually have to bathe her entirely.  Here is a pic of Rue after swimming in her food/formula mix and screaming at me to stay with her.

My kitten cam cast grew again with the arrival of Rainbow and her brood of 5.   Jessica went to another foster home and the kitten cam crew got bigger.

Rue had problems growing, so she took a while to grow up.  While other litters came and went, she was still on the kitten cam.  She was always the star. And just got feistier though didn't grow much for a while.  When she was added to the Finding Nemo litter, she was smaller but 2 months older, and DEFINITELY the boss.

Rue eventually grew up, and I was too smitten with her to give her up.  Now when I am not at home she is allowed to go visit the kittens and the kitten cam, always wanting to be the star :)

Momma dog gives birth

We thought we had another month, but little Parson Russell Terrier mom gave birth today to three healthy and one very preemie stillborn. Mom is very proud. Chug would love puppies but mom attacks him on sight. However, Gaia, Rue and Eponine were welcome to observe. Gaia considered stealing a puppy, and after a short growl exchange, Gaia moved away.

UPDATE: at 6:45, nearly 12 hours after labor began, the momma dog popped out 3 more puppies.  Sadly the first of the three was stillborn, but the other two are healthy and strong.

Mom and babies have been moved to a tent of their own, with view obstructed so Mom won't get stressed out by the other animals.  This also lets Chug roam free of the crate he had to stay in all day because mom attacks him on sight, but now that he has his freedom, he's still too afraid to come out of the crate.

Mercy's Eye Surgery

Here is an update on sweet Mercy the kitten's eye surgery.

So Mercy just had her eye surgery (yesterday, Wednesday June 5). It's called Keratectomy of the eye (removing conjunctiva adhesed to her eye).  She is on three eye drops four times a day for 7-10 days then she has her first check up. We will know in 15-30 days if the surgery was effective giving her full vision back in her eye or if the conjunctiva will try to adhere itself back over the eye. She's on tough cookie so I have positive hopes for her!

Big thank you to all who donated towards her surgery, and to her foster mom who had her since she was 3 weeks old and is still giving her excellent care, love, and attention.

Cam Star Updates: Merlyn (Maya) and Miss Hugo (Wink)

Hello!
We adopted Merlyn a month ago and renamed her Maya. She is an amazing animal. She adapted very well and took over the whole house. Her favorite new toy is her older brother's tail and her favorite place to sleep is on my pillow.
Maya is fearless...she is the bravest little kitten I have ever seen. We had to kitty proof the house because she was trying to take big jumps that were too high even for our older cat. She is such a cuddler and perfect in so many ways. This kitty wants to play, cuddle, bite, attack, purr and be held all in the same time.
We loved her since the first day we brought her home.
Olga
